Suspect Executed in 2007
Officer Gregg Winters succumbed
to gunshot wounds suffered 11 days earlier after being shot while transporting
a prisoner.
Officer Winters had arrested
a subject for public intoxication and he was placed in the rear seat
of his squad car after being searched. Approximately one-eighth mile
from the jail, the handcuffed subject was able to pull out a concealed
.25-caliber semi-automatic handgun and shoot Officer Winters in the
back of the head and neck five times. Leaving behind a wife, Molly and
two young sons.
The suspect was convicted
of murder and sentenced to death. On June 15, 2007, Michael Lambert,
now 36, was executed by lethal injection.
