IN VALOR THERE IS HOPE
Throughout our country, in our cities, counties, states and even in
our Nation's Capital there are bronze statues, marble columns and granite
monoliths that memorialize our fallen police officers. These memorials
are a tangible reminder of our domestic police defense force, nearly
900,000 strong, that stands ready 24 hours a day to protect our homes,
schools and communities.
The first recorded incident of an American police officer killed in
the line of duty happened in 1792. Since that time, 16,500 police officers
have died in the course of their job. Anyone who has witnessed a law
enforcement funeral procession can tell you how stirring, sad and somber
such a tribute can be. The wailing sirens pierce the air and hearts
as does the music from the bagpiper, for all of those who are present.
My hope is that this flag will fly at our homes and in public displays
as another constant reminder of those police officers that have served
our communities. Their dedication, bravery and commitment to the law
that gives us peace of mind that we too often take for granted. Their
job is to preserve that peace, and they deserve our immense gratitude
and respect. These men and women are heroes.
